BIO

My first break in Hollywood was scoring the tale of a vampire slayer named BUFFY and her Scooby-gang. Following graduation from the USC film scoring program I worked as composer Christophe Beck's assistant. When Joss Whedon wrote "Once More, With Feeling" he brought Chris back to the show as Music Director. During the musical I got to know Joss and when he needed to hire a composer that next fall, Chris generously recommended me and helped me take the big leap from assistant to composer scoring season 7 of "BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER" for 20th Century Fox and Mutant Enemy.

Since Buffy I've been privileged to score 8 seasons of television series and over 30 award-winning features, documentaries and short subjects. My television credits include the outstanding series "ANGEL", "MIRACLES" and "DUCK DODGERS" co-composed with Rob Kral and "DAY BREAK" co-composed with Mark Kilian. Film work includes scoring the LA Screamfest Crystal Skull Award documentary H.H. HOLMES, the Detroit sci-fi sensation INZER0 that captured the attention of director Sam Raimi, the Comic-Con award-winning space fantasy ROCKETBOY staring Robert Picardo, the Angelus Awards finalist THE TRUTH ABOUT FACES staring Hannah Hall, the Park City Film Music Festival Gold Medal winners ENTITY: NINE, FREEDOMLAND and SHELTER, the USA Film Festival finalist BEYOND THE SILENCE, the ION International award-winning thriller ANTEBODY,the CINE special jury award-winning period drama SUNDAY PAPER p.2b, the Big Bear audience award-winning animated film PAPER CUT. I've also scored additional music for Chris Beck on Universal's THE SKULLS III , THE SKULLS II, USA Network's WOLF GIRL and contributed source music and orchestration to Universal's BIG FAT LIAR, Imagine's STEALING HARVARD, and Bob Gale's INTERSTATE 60: Episodes of the Road.

EXPRESSING THE INEXPRESSIBLE, a compilation CD of my work for 8 award-winning independent films was released to (truly humbling) critical acclaim including “Melodically Douglas Romayne shows immense talent and I can't wait to hear more orchestral music by him!” — Music From The Movies and “A fabulous demonstration of his ability to create melodic, large-sounding scores.” — Film Score Monthly

My primary instruments are piano and guitar. I'm currently studying conducting the orchestra with Eimear Noone at UCLA and in down time writing concert work and arrangements. I've produced and written arrangements for pop albums, including three with Jane Wang Beck incorporating traditional Tibetan chants with a mix of pop, rock and world music.

My home is in Los Angeles where I score film, television and new media out of my project studio Back Pocket, run carbon-neutral with green energy. I'm a member of number of film and music-related organizations including Film Independent, The Society of Composers and Lyricists and the American Federation of Musicians Local 47, as well as ACLU and the Courage Campaign. Linda Kordek of The Agency Group/LA, and Karrie Vickery of Bleu Jean Mgmt. represent my work.

TRAINING

I grew up surrounded by music from Roy Acuff to Frederic Chopin. When I turned 5, I had my first piano lesson from my older sister, a college student studying music education at the time, and at age 8 a guitar lesson from my mother, who formed a country and western band with her sisters. In junior high I started writing pop songs and had the good fortune to attend a high school that taught music theory and provided opportunities for my early work to be performed. Formal education included an undergrad degree in music composition and piano, grad level course work with Cliff Colnot, Chicago Symphony Orchestra MusicNOW conductor, at the University of Chicago and DePaul University, and private composition studies with Venetian composer Hans Wurman.

Hans invited me to co-compose an independent film with him and encouraged me to pursue scoring professionally. I scored episodes for two A&E series produced by Bill Kurtis Productions before moving to Los Angeles to attend USC's Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television program. I spent that year studying under composers Christopher Young, Elmer Bernstein and Buddy Baker, and writing for session players with recording dates at famed Newman Stage and Skywalker Ranch.
